A
When she moved the covering cloth to look upon his tiny face, she was shocked. The doctor turned quickly and looked out of the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.
Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. When he rushed home from school one day and threw himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be full of heart- breaks for his imperfect appearance.
He grew up, handsome for his misfortune and popular with his fellow students. He might have been class monitor, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music.
Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, “You’re going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret.” The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person turned up. His talents blossomed into genius, and his school and college became a series of success. Later he married and entered the diplomatic service.
One day, he urged his father, “Who gave so much for me? I must know! I could never do enough for him.” “I do not believe you could, ” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know... not yet.”
The years kept their secret, but the day did come--- one of the darkest days that a son must endure. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket (棺材).
- 2 -
Slowly, tenderly, the father reached out a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to show that the mother had no outer ears.
“Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut, ” he whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?” Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance, but in the heart.
Real treasure lies not in what can be seen, but in what cannot be seen. Real love lies not in what is done and known, but in what is done and not known. 21. The mother was shocked at the first sight of her baby because ____. A. her baby was born without hair B. her baby had a tiny face C. her baby was born imperfect
D. the doctor turned to look out of the window
22. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. The son attempted to repay the donator’s kindness. B. The son didn't know the truth until his mother died. C. With donated ears, the son’s life developed smoothly. D. The boy couldn't hear clearly without ears at first. 23. Why did the boy's mother never have her hair cut? A. Because her hair added to her beauty. B. Because her hair helped to keep a secret. C. Because her long hair was her pride.
D. Because she liked her thick and brown hair. 24. Which is the best title for the passage? A.A Misfortunate Boy B. Mother’s Hair
C. Mother’s Secret Love D.A Successful Ear Operation

Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.
A study, which included nearly 1,400 high school students, found those who watched TV for five hours or more every day had less healthy diets than peers(同龄人)five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures? On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may affect their long-term diet quality.
On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks cause teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.
Lead researcher Dr. Dahcia J. Barr-Anderson, of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear relation between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who’d watched less than two hours per day had the highest intake(吸收) of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing.
- 3 -
As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time. 25. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. People should keep away from TV to keep healthy. B. Teenagers’ TV time may affect their diets later. C. Why do teenagers like TV.
D. Parents’ own habits may affect children later.
26. According to the passage, heavy TV viewers are easy to___________. A. eat more fruits.
B. eat fewer vegetables. C. eat less junk food. D. eat high-calcium food.
27. What suggestion does the author give the parents? A. They must watch TV with their children.
B. They should stop the children from watching TV. C. They should pay attention to nutrition in diets.
D. They can’t do what they don’t want their children to do.
28. The underlined word “curbing” in the last paragraph can be replaced by___________. A. adding B. checking C. controlling D. stopping
C
There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can't help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths:
I’ll never lose weight—I come from a fat family
Wrong! While we can't change the body type we are born with, we can't blame our genes for making us fat. There's plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habit of eating too much and exercising too little.
I am fat because I burn calories slowly
Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism(新陈代谢). In fact, although fat people consume more energy than slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately. Exercise is boring
Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively. The key is to develop a balanced and varied program that's fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do yoga, try a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge. No pain, no gain
- 4 -
Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something's wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this is your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If they don't, rest and seek medical advice. 29. What does the author think about being fat? A. It is the family genes that make people fat.
B. People are fat because they consume too little energy. C.A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat. D. It is the consequence of people's unbalanced lifestyle.
30. According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting? A. By taking varied exercise. B. By choosing simple exercise. C. By doing regular exercise.
D. By sticking to outdoor exercise.
31. What is the author's opinion about \"No pain, no gain\" in exercising? A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience.
B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt. C. Pain in exercise is a precondition for reaching your goal. D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body. 32. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To declare the importance of keeping fit.
B. To clarify some misunderstandings about fatness and exercise. C. To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit.
D. To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise.
D
You’ve flown halfway around the world; you’ve sniffed out this place that nobody in Falongland or Thailand seems to have ever heard of; so what on earth is there to do here? You consider this question as you sink into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand.
It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. By the time you found the bus station and got yourself sorted out, it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.
Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin, about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the west side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been their purpose all along.
There's an apparent laziness that surrounds you here. It's what this place offers, and it's free of charge. The small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything down. You settle into your beach chair in preparation for a long rest. You sit there and watch the sea.
It’s early afternoon, so the cook comes out and asks what you’d like to eat this evening. Before long he’s rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to order. No menu here. There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue

sea. There’s no street noise. The only sounds are the murmurs of nature.
For now you just count your blessings (福祉), listing them in the sand with your toe (脚趾). You don’t have to worry about being late for work. You don’t have to do anything. The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon (地平线), slowly narrowing to nothingness only to re-emerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it covers the chair beneath you. Sand to your left and sand to your right; it’s unbroken, endless. No start, no end, just sand, sun, and peace. Step off it, and you re-enter the world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry.
Normally you’re the type who can’t sit still for more than ten minutes, but you're on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world.
\"How could it take me so long to find it?\" you wonder. 33. When the author first went to Huaplee Beach, _____. A. he found it unworthywhile B. he failed to sort himself out C. he became sensitive to smell D. he had difficulty in finding it

书面表达
Dear fellow students,
I’m Li Hua, a senior two student. Now I’m appealing to you to focus more attention on shared bikes, of which the popularity has been considerably increasing. Benefits of shared bicycle riding are obvious: they never produce pollution, thus encouraging low-carbon lifestyle. Convenience is also why people are in favor. Additionally, public bikes are almost free of charge while other forms, taxi for example, are quite expensive. But still, problems cannot be overlooked. The main concern is that random parking frequently bothers others a lot. Worse of all, bikes of this kind are left damaged for unknown reasons. So, considerate parking is what enables everyone to enjoy the public facility. And please keep in mind that when using, one should take good care of shared bikes rather than destroying the properties. A small action can make a huge difference. Everybody counts!
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua
