Water Pollution
Water pollution is caused by waste from factories and cities. Oceans are able to clean themselves, but certain seas,once they become dirty, are not able to do so. One example is the Mediterranean which lies between Europe and Africa. It has onlyeone narrow entrance to the ocean in the west. On quarter of the shores of the Mediterranean are polluted and are no longer safe for swimming, as a lot of diseases are present in the water. In most places it is not safe to eat the fish.
Lakes also have the same problems. Lake Baikal in Asia was once the cleanest in the world, with over 700 different kinds of plant and animal life. Now, however, the waters of this great lake, which is also the world's deepest (over 1,740 metres), have been dirtied by waste from a chemical factory.
In 19 an oil tanker hit a rock off the northwest coast of Alaska. 35,000 tons of oil poured into the sea. The accident was one of the worst in history. More than 34,000 birds and
10,000 animals were killed. 4,800 square kilometres of ocean were polluted.

Dear Editor,
In some places in our country the environment are worsening with the air filled with heavy smoke, many mountains turning deserted and rivers polluted. And people are almost surrounded by waste.
So I strongly suggest that the government take effective measures to stop this. To begin with, more laws should be passed to protect the environment. Factories are forbidden to give out smoke and poisonous gases into the air. Secondly, every year more trees should be planted on the mountains. No one is allowed to cut down any trees or pour waste water into the rivers. Anyone who breaks the law should be punished.
What’s more, the public are supposed to become aware that it is a shame to throw rubbish about. All people should form good habits to protect the surroundings. Only when the whole society takes actions, will the sky turn blue, mountains green and rivers clear. Thus our homeland will become more beautiful and comfortable to live in。

A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world's people may not have enough water by the year 2025.

A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than three-hundred-thirty-five-million people lack enough water now. The people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.

P-A-I researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three-thousand-million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.

The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking waters not safe. Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies. This is because new instries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.

The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water of agriculture.

The report also says long-term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth. It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have.

Global warming threatens to reverse human progress, and make unachievable all UN targets to rece poverty(联合国所有减少贫穷的目标), according to some of the world's leading international and development groups.
In a report published today, Oxfam, Greenpeace, Christian Aid, Friends of the Earth, WWF(英国牛津救济委员会、“绿色和平”组织、*徒互援会、“地球之友”组织、世界野生动物基金组织) and 15 other groups say rich governments must immediately address(致力于) climate change to avoid even "obscene levels(无法忍受的程度)" of worldwide poverty.
"Food proction, water supplies, public health and people's livelihoods are already being damaged and undermined," the report says. "There is no either/or approach possible(想找一个‘非此即彼'的办法是不可能的). The world must meet its commitments to achieve poverty rection and also tackle climate change. The two are inextricably linked(二者的联系是难解难分的)."
The report, which draws on UN predictions of the effects of climate change in poor countries over the next 50 years, says poor countries will experience more flooding, declining food proction, more disease and the deterioration or extinction of entire ecosystems(整个生态系统的退化甚至消失) on which many of the world's poorest people depend.
"Climate change needs to be addressed now. The poor will bear the brunt of the impacts. The frontline experience of many of us working in international development indicates that communities are having to combat more extreme weather conditions."
Climate change will play havoc（大范围的破坏；浩劫） with agriculture and water supplies and will increase diseases. "By 2025 the proportion of the world's population living in countries of significant water stress will almost double, to 6 billion people. Tropical and sub-tropical areas will be hardest hit - those countries already suffering from food insecurity(食品短缺)".
Poor communities mostly do not need hi-tech solutions, but would most benefit from ecation, research and being shown how to farm better. The report says unchecked global warming(尚未得到抑制的全球变暖), more than wars or political upheaval(政变), will displace millions of people and destabilise many countries.

Today, our environment has some problems . As a middle school student ,we should do something to improve our environment condition.
I think the first thing is that we ourselves shouldn’t destroy the environment, such as throw the rubbish about. We can also take part in some commonweal activity to plant more trees, for the trees can do a lot help to our environment. And if we see someone do the harm things to the environment, like spit on the ground or step on the grass, we can stop them from doing so. If there’s a factory which destroy the environment, it’s our right and incumbency to tell the relative department or the police about it.
All in all, although we are students we can still do a lot of things to protect our environment. So we should act from now on to make our contribution to the environment, for it’s our conjunct home.
